How It All Works

Islington Labour – how it works

Islington North CLP* covers roughly half of the London Borough of Islington and is divided into eight Wards or Branches, the fundamental building block of the Party - Finsbury Park, Highbury East, Highbury West, Hillrise, Junction, Mildmay, St Georges or Tolington.

Wards

Wards meet on the first Wednesday of every month except in August and December (occasionally this will change due to e.g., election dates). Members and Affiliated Supporters are welcome.

Each Ward elects delegates to the INCLP General Meeting (GM) at the Ward AGM (and possibly at other times in the year); the number of delegates a Ward is allowed depends on the number of members in that Ward. Equalities groups can also send delegates. If you are interested in becoming a delegate to GM, we recommend you attend several meetings before you ask your Ward or one of the equalities groups to nominate you.

The CLP

The INCLP General Meeting is the decision-making body for the constituency and meets on the third Wednesday every month except August and December (occasionally this will change due to e.g., election dates). Meetings start at 7.45pm and take place at the Old Fire Station, Mayton Street N7 6QT, on the corner of Hertslet Street. All Members and Affiliated Supporters are welcome but only GM delegates can vote.

The GM elects the CLP Executive Committee, which meets on the second Wednesday of the month, between the Ward meeting and GM meeting. The people on the CLP EC are a mix of ex officio* members and individuals elected at the CLP AGM who look in detail at administrative matters for the CLP and make recommendations to GM about potential decisions. For a list of current CLP EC members, please contact the CLP Secretary - email secretary@islingtonnorthlabour.org.uk

If you are interested in becoming a delegate to GM, we recommend you attend several meetings before you ask your Ward or one of the equalities groups to nominate you.

At the meeting in June, GM elects CLP delegates to the Party Annual Conference; we usually send two. If you wish to be considered, you must be nominated by your Ward.

Islington borough

Islington Labour is made up of Wards, CLPs (Constituency Labour Party - Islington North and Islington South & Finsbury), the LCF (Local Campaign Forum, for the whole borough) and equalities groups such as Islington North Women's Forum.

Islington Labour Local Campaign Forum brings together people from Islington North and Islington South & Finsbury CLPs and from the Group of Labour councillors as the area managed by Islington Council covers both constituencies. We meet every two months (except August and December). It meets to discuss matters relevant to local government and to campaigning in Islington. The meetings hear reports from councillors and agree the local manifesto (although it must also be approved by the councillors). All Members and Affiliated Supporters are welcome but only LCF delegates can vote. The Chair, Secretary and Campaigns Organiser of each CLP are delegates, and each ward elects delegates at their AGM. Equalities groups and affiliates such as unions can also send delegates. Between full LCF meetings, the LCF EC (Executive Committee) meets. This group of 18 people is a mix of officers of the CLPs and individuals elected at the LCF AGM who look in detail at administrative matters for the LCF and make recommendations to the full LCF about potential decisions. A list of current LCF EC members can be found (here). For more information, contact LCF Secretary (and INCLP Hillrise Ward member) Russell Smith-Becker at lcf.sec@islingtonlabour.org.uk.

Islington North Womens' Forum

The Women's Forum is an informal network promoting and supporting women members' involvement in the party at branch and constituency level.  We organise several policy/social events during the year, including an AGM in November/December.  We also hold training events to encourage women to represent the party and stand for elected office.  We have good links with local community women's organisations who have for many years worked with us to celebrate International Women's Day in March.  For more information contact womens.forum@islingtonlabour.org.uk

Islington North Youth Labour

Islington North Youth Labour is youth wing of the Islington North Labour Party. It's for all Members, Affiliated Supporters and Registered Supporters of the Labour Party aged between 14-26 living in Islington North CLP.  Being part of Islington North Young Labour is a great way of getting involved in political debates, meeting like-minded young people and campaigning on both local issues affecting young people in our borough and for Labour candidates around Islington and wider afield.  Do get in touch with any questions, comments or ideas on how to engage with more young people via youth.labour@islingtonnorth.org.uk

Equalities Officers

In addition, INCLP has officers for LGBT, BAME and disabled members who can be contacted via the CLP Secretary secretary@islingtonnorthlabour.org.uk

There are equalities groups and other campaigns affiliated to the Party as Socialist Societies. This includes BAME Labour, Disability Labour, Labour Women's Network, LGBT Labour and Labour Students as well as campaigns such as Christians on the Left, the Fabian Society and Labour Irish Society.
