TLAs, jargon and technical terms: learn to speak Labour

  • Affiliated Supporter (of the Labour Party): a supporter who signs up through an affiliated organisation. e.g., a trades union 
  • AGM: Annual General Meeting – Wards, the CLP and the LCF all hold AGMs at which officers are elected and finances reviewed. Ward AGMs are in September, the CLP in October and the LCF in January
  • AWS: All Women Shortlist
  • BLP: Branch Labour Party or Ward
  • board, running the board: named after the clipboard on which the organiser records information canvassers have learned from talking to the electorate whilst named after the clipboard where the organiser writes down any details canvassers have learned from talking to the electorate whilst doorknocking
  • Campaign Co-ordinator: Ward Campaign Co-ordinator or Organiser, elected at the AGM, responsible for organising canvassing sessions
  • canvassing (also called "doorknocking"):  talking to members of the public to ask how they will vote or persuade them to vote Labour
  • CLP: Constituency Labour Party
  • Contact Creator: the Party's national voter database

  • EC: Executive Committee (of the CLP or LCF)
  • ex officio: because of one's office e.g., the Chair of INCLP is an ex officio member of the LCF
  • GC: General Committee; previous term for CLP General Meeting
  • GM: General Meeting (of the CLP) - meets on the third Wednesday of every month except August and December, usually has an external speaker together with reports from a Councillor and the MP; all members are welcome but only delegates (elected by Wards) may vote
  • GOTV: Get Out The Vote
  • GOTPV: Get Out The Postal Vote
  • grid: the list of all canvassing/campaigning events, so-called because it's presented in grid format showing start times, meeting location, organiser name & contact details and area to be canvassed
  • Group: the group of Labour councillors on Islington council
  • LCF: Local Campaign Forum – a borough wide group of delegates from Islington North and Islington South & Finsbury CLPs as well as from the council to discuss campaign issues for the borough
  • INCLP: Islington North Constituency Labour Party
  • ISFCLP: Islington South & Finsbury Constituency Labour Party
  • Member (of the Labour Party): A full member of the Labour Party paying the Standard, Reduced, Youth, Student, Armed Forces or affiliated Trades Union rate. See https://join.labour.org.uk/

  • OMOV: one member, one vote
  • organiser: Ward Organiser or Campaign Co-ordinator, elected at the AGM, responsible for organising canvassing sessions
  • PPC: Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
  • PLP: Parliamentary Labour Party
  • point person: People in the NationBuilder can be allocated a point person (in INCLP usually your Ward Organiser) who is responsible for managing the relationship with that individual, e.g., when they receive mailouts from the Ward
  • Registered Supporter (of the Labour Party): A supporter who paid £3 for a vote in the 2015 leadership contest; this expires a year after the date you joined unless you re-join as an Affiliated Supporter or full Member You can re-join at https://join.labour.org.uk/
  • short campaign: A period of time before election day during which all details of expenditure must be sent to the candidate for inclusion in their records The 2016 Mayoral short campaign started on 21st March with election day on 5th May
  • TLA: Three Letter Acronym

  • Ward: the basic geographical building block of the Labour Party. Islington North has eight Wards - Finsbury Park, Highbury East, Highbury West, Hillrise, Junction, Mildmay, St Georges or Tolington
  • young member: if you are under 27 you are automatically a member of Young Labour http://www.younglabour.org.uk
